OpenComp's Benchmark references a hierarchal job architecture. The hierarchy is as follows:
Job Area: represents a group of roles, for example, Software Engineers are part of the Technology job area
Job Family: a job family is a collection of job roles across job types, for example Software Engineering includes Software Engineer, Software Engineering Mgmt, VP Engineering, SVP Engineering, Chief Technology Officer
Role Type: the role type identifies the track of the job–there are four role types: support, independent contributor, management, or executive
Job Role: you can think of a job role as a job title, for example a Software Engineer
Role Level: Within each Job Role, individuals can occupy a range of Role Levels, which indicate the seniority, responsibility, and complexity associated with a particular job role. OpenComp's Benchmark uses up to 6 Role Levels.
